Position Details: 

Position Description - Secretary to the Elementary Principal


Primary Function:

Assist the Elementary Principal in the day to day operations of the school office.



  • High school graduate, or equivalent with courses in math, typing, English and word processing equipment.
  • Prefer successful prior experience working in an office setting, particularly in a school office.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Typing skill at a rate of 60 words per minute with high accuracy and knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and adhere to the privacy act (FERPA).
  • Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with the public, students, peers, staff and parents, and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Willingness to increase knowledge in word processing and data processing operations, as well as learning new technology.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Fluent in the use of Microsoft Office programs and Google platforms (gmail, docs, sheets, etc.)
  • Basic qualities:  ability to prioritize and multi-task; readiness to learn, do and be directed; demonstrate ingenuity, initiative, and flexibility; be detail oriented.





  1. Responsible for the operation of the elementary office.
  2. Obtain, maintain, update and transfer records and reports as required.
  3. Answer and transfer phone calls, handle office walk ins, respond to e-mail and other correspondence.
  4. Keep accurate records of changes to student schedules and attendance.
  5. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with school staff and community members.
  6. Word processing, desktop publishing and basic typing skills and the knowledge to provide technical support with Microsoft Office software, as well as ability to maintain websites and social media.
  7. Administer minimal first aid and medicine according to State Guidelines.
  8. Obeys and enforces all State and District policies, rules, regulations and procedures.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
